Top 5 Mistakes to Avoid When Installing Synthetic Turf

Most artificial turf installations that develop problems early do so for the same reasons. Poor base prep, drainage shortcuts, and installation errors that seem minor at the time compound into significant issues over the first few years of use. Here are the five mistakes that cause the most trouble.

Mistake 1: Skipping Proper Excavation

The most common mistake in residential installations is not excavating deep enough. Leaving organic material in the base, including roots, grass, and topsoil, creates a decomposing layer under the turf that causes soft spots, uneven settling, and weed growth through the backing. Minimum excavation depth is four inches for residential applications and six for pet or athletic use areas. Do it right the first time.

Mistake 2: Poor Drainage Design

Flat turf installations hold water. Even a small amount of crown or grade toward a drainage point prevents pooling and keeps the surface usable after rain. Failing to grade the base is one of the most common reasons homeowners end up with standing water in the middle of their new turf installation. Plan the drainage before you start excavating.

Mistake 3: Using the Wrong Base Material

Not all gravel is the same. The base for artificial turf needs to be a crushed, angular aggregate that compacts and locks together. Rounded pea gravel shifts under load and does not provide a stable base. Decomposed granite works in some applications but needs to be properly compacted. Class II road base is the standard reliable choice for residential and commercial installs.

Mistake 4: Ignoring Edge Anchoring

Edges that are not properly secured are the most common source of turf failure. Wind lifts unanchored edges. Foot traffic rolls them back. Weed growth finds the gap between the turf edge and adjacent hardscape. Use bender board along all perimeter edges, nail at proper spacing, and secure the turf firmly to the bender board. This takes more time but the installation holds for years.

Mistake 5: Skimping on Infill

Infill does more than add weight. It supports the fibers in the upright position, contributes to drainage performance, and provides cushioning. Under-filled turf looks flat, drains poorly, and does not perform the way it should. Apply infill at the manufacturer-recommended rate and brush it in properly. For pet areas, use the right infill product for odor control.
