Drainage is the part of artificial turf installation that gets the least attention in most how-to guides and causes the most problems in the field. A turf system that does not drain properly holds water, develops odor in pet areas, and can become a safety hazard in freezing temperatures. Getting drainage right means thinking about it at every step of the installation process.
Start with the Native Soil
Before you excavate, understand what you are working with. Clay soils drain slowly. Sandy soils drain well. Rocky subgrades may need additional consideration. If you are installing over clay soil with poor natural drainage, you need to plan for that in your base specification. A thicker aggregate base and possibly a perimeter drain line will be required to prevent water from sitting at the subgrade level.
Grade the Base
A flat installation holds water. Grade the base with a minimum one percent slope toward a drainage outlet or permeable border. This means the base surface drops at least one inch for every hundred inches of horizontal run. In practice, for a standard backyard, this is a noticeable but gentle slope that is invisible once the turf is installed.
Identify where the water will go before you start. It needs somewhere to flow to: a gravel border, a drainage channel, a permeable area, or a drain outlet.
Aggregate Base Depth and Compaction
The aggregate base provides the drainage pathway between the turf surface and the subgrade. Deeper base means more volume for water movement. Standard residential installs need a minimum four to six inches of compacted Class II road base. Pet areas and athletic installations need six to eight inches.
Compact in lifts. Over-compacting a single thick layer creates a dense layer at the surface that can impede drainage. Two-inch lifts compacted progressively allow the base to achieve the correct density while maintaining internal drainage.
Turf Backing Selection
Not all turf backings drain at the same rate. Standard backings typically flow at fifteen to twenty inches per hour, which is adequate for residential landscape use. Pet areas and athletic fields should use higher-flow drainage backings that can handle greater liquid volumes quickly.
The drainage capacity of the backing needs to match the expected liquid load. A high-drainage backing on a poorly graded base still pools. All the elements have to work together.
