Step-by-Step DIY Artificial Turf Installation Guide

What you need:

Tools Materials
Basic yard tools Artificial turf
Utility knife Recycled road base, and crushed stone base (breeze)
Plate compactor (rentable) Weed barrier fabric
Hammer Infill (silica sand or Optifill)
Broom & leaf blower Seam tape & adhesive
Measuring tape Edging (bender board or pavers)
If a large area, small equipment rental such as a “dingo” Landscape spikes (5-6 inch)

Step 1: Plan and Measure Your Space

1.    Measure twice: Length × width = total sq ft. Add 5–10% for waste/cuts.

2.    Sketch it: Mark sprinkler heads, trees, or curves. Plan seams in low-traffic areas.

3.    Order turf: Call us to explore your options or come visit us at our showroom!

Step 2: Demo Day!

1.    Kill grass: Spray glyphosate or smother with black plastic (2 weeks prior).

2.    Excavate: Dig 3–4″ deep across the area. Haul away sod/debris. We recommend renting a Dingo or small skid steer.

3.    Slope check: Ensure the grade is away from house for drainage.

Step 3: Build a Rock-Solid Base

1.    Add 1st step of base material: Spread 3”- 4″ of recycled road base. Water lightly, compact until rock-hard (no footprints).

*Pro tip: Rent a compactor—don’t skip this!

2.    Add 2nd step of base material:Spread 1/2” to ¾” of breeze (crusher fines). Water lightly, compact until smooth surface.

3.    Screed smooth: Use a 2×4 to level the surface perfectly.

Step 4: Roll Out & Cut the Turf

1.    Unroll turf: Let it relax in sun for 1–2 hours (reduces wrinkles).

2.    Position carefully: Align grain direction (all blades facing same way).

3.    Trim edges: Use a sharp utility knife. Cut from the BACK for clean lines. DO NOT cut on top as grass blades will get cut and look awkward. Leave a 1/4 to 1/2 inch over the edge of your borders.

4.    Curves?: Make relief cuts, then fold and glue.

Step 5: Seam It Like a Pro

1.    Align seams: Butt edges together (no gaps/overlaps). Want a “seamless” appearance.  Use an “S pattern” cut vs. a straight line cut.

2.    Lay seaming tape: Center under seam, apply adhesive.

3.    Press & weight: Use a heavy roller or kneel to bond. Wait 2 hrs.

*Pro Tip: Use bags of infill to lay on seams to keep weighed down during bonding

Step 6: Secure & Apply Infill

1.    Nail edges: Spike every 6″ around perimeter (use 5-6″ galvanized nails).

2.    Spread infill: Broadcast silica sand or Optifill per turf requirements. Some turf only needs 1 lb/sq ft, others need 4 lbs/sq ft. Brush in with a shop broom or rent a power broom.

3.    Final groom: Power brush against the grain—watch it fluff up!

Step 7: Admire & Enjoy!

1.    Water: Hose lightly to settle infill.

2.    First mow? Ha!  Never again. Just rinse occasionally.

3.    Bonus: If you have pets, you will want to clean your turf 1-2x per year.

Common DIY Mistakes (Avoid These!)

Mistake Fix
Skipping compaction Leads to lumps/divots
Poor drainage planning Puddles = mold
Visible seams Practice cuts on scrap
No infill Turf flattens fast and will wave/heave
